Genetic Bank
From a small skin biopsy collected from the tail crease, neck or ear, a genetic bank of the animal(s) of interest is created. The collected tissue is then shipped to Fortgen's laboratory by road or air transport. In the laboratory, the tissue is sanitized and cut into small fragments that are cultivated for an approximate period of 14 days.
Over the course of the culture period, large numbers of cells (fibroblasts) break away from the tissue fragments and multiply. Millions of cells are stored frozen at -196°C in liquid nitrogen cylinders. At that moment, the genetic bank is already constituted. Cells can remain stored for an unlimited time.
The Cell Genetic Bank can be considered as a kind of life insurance, since at any moment the Animal Cloning process can be started using previously stored cells. Young or old, healthy or sick, alive or dead animals can, indifferently, be cloned from the moment the Genetic Bank is established.
